Reading Time: 5 Minutes

Thinking about starting yoga? It is completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. You might have found yourself typing “yoga near me” into Google, only to hesitate when it came time to book. In fact, “gymtimidation”, anxiety about exercising in front of others, is a common barrier that prevents many people from starting a wellness journey.

At New Moon Yoga, we do things differently. Known to locals as New Moon Yoga Kew East, our boutique studio is designed to be warm, welcoming, and semi-private. If you are looking for yoga that Kew East residents trust for a personal touch, you have found the right place. Unlike large, anonymous gyms where you might feel lost in a crowd of thirty people, we deliberately cap our classes at just eight (8) students.

This small group setting allows us to guide your alignment and support you every step of the way. Research has consistently shown that personalized attention in exercise settings not only reduces the risk of injury but also significantly improves adherence to a fitness routine (Rhea et al., 2003). Here, you can achieve things you thought were impossible, leaving stronger, more flexible, calmer, and feeling happier.

Walk In, Breathe Out

One of the first questions beginners ask is, “What do I need to bring?”. The answer is simple: just yourself.

We have stripped away the complexity to help you focus on the practice. There is no need for expensive gear or high-tech equipment. The ritual of arriving is designed to help you transition from the busyness of your day into a state of mindfulness.

As you enter, you will leave your shoes on the shelf, a symbolic gesture of leaving the outside world behind. Step inside, and trust yourself. The goal of your first few minutes isn't to perfect a pose, but to settle your nervous system. As Woodyard (2011) notes in the International Journal of Yoga, the therapeutic effects of yoga begin with simply regulating the breath and calming the mind, which lowers cortisol levels and reduces stress.

Close your eyes, follow your breath, and move at your own pace. You have arrived.

Come As You Are

A common misconception is that yoga is reserved for the young or the naturally flexible. This could not be further from the truth.

Our studio is ageless. We welcome students from our immediate neighborhood and the surrounding suburbs. Whether you are walking in from down the street or driving over looking for yoga Templestowe options, you will find a community spanning their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond.

We are also deeply committed to supporting women navigating life transitions, including menopause. Studies have highlighted that yoga can be an effective intervention for managing menopausal symptoms, including psychological distress and fatigue (Cramer et al., 2012).

Perhaps the biggest myth we hear is, “I can't do yoga, I'm not flexible”. Saying you are too stiff for yoga is like saying you are too dirty to take a bath. You don’t do yoga because you are flexible; you do yoga to become flexible.

Whether you are looking to loosen stiff muscles from desk work or looking to return to movement after a long break, our practice meets you exactly where you are today.

What to Expect During Class.

So, what actually happens once the class begins?

1. Comfortable Clothing: Wear clothes that allow you to move freely. You don’t need designer activewear; a simple t-shirt and leggings or shorts are perfect.

2. Personal Guidance: Because our classes are semi-private, you won't be hiding in the back row, guessing what to do. Our teacher offers gentle, personal guidance to correct your alignment. This ensures you are building strength safely and effectively. Proper alignment is crucial not just for preventing injury, but for maximizing the biomechanical benefits of every pose.

3. Listening to Your Body: This is the only rule that truly matters. Yoga teaches interoception, the ability to sense the internal state of the body (Farb et al., 2015). If a pose doesn't feel right, you stop or modify it.

At New Moon Yoga, we encourage you not to push. Instead, create space and let the pose arrive at you. It is about progress, not perfection.

Conclusion

Starting something new takes courage, but you don't have to do it alone.

New Moon Yoga is more than just a place to exercise; it is a supportive community focused on personal growth. By keeping our classes small and our atmosphere friendly, we ensure that every student feels seen and supported.

You are capable of more than you know. All it takes is that first step through the door.
