Reading Time: 5 Minutes.
Life has a way of teaching us lessons, sometimes the hard way.
For a long time, I treated my body like a machine that could just keep going, regardless of how I treated it. Then came my first serious injury. It changed my life in an instant. I was in pain, forced to slow down, and confronted with the confronting reality that my body wasn’t invincible.
It was frustrating, scary, and humbling. Like many people, I found myself typing “yoga near me” into search engines, not necessarily because I wanted to become a yogi, but because I was desperate for relief and a way to move that didn't hurt.
That is when I discovered yoga. Through gentle, guided movement, I didn't just rehab a muscle; I rebuilt strength, flexibility, and, most importantly, confidence in my body. Over the years, I have continued this practice. Now, 17 years later, I share my journey with others who want to recover, prevent injury, and reconnect with their bodies.

When we are injured, our relationship with our body changes. We lose trust. We become afraid to move, creating a cycle of fear and stiffness. This phenomenon, known as fear-avoidance, can actually exacerbate chronic pain and disability (Vlaeyen and Linton, 2000).
I initially thought yoga was just stretching, but it became my rehabilitation. It taught me the difference between “good pain” (the sensation of effort and strengthening) and “bad pain” (the sharp signal of injury).
At New Moon Yoga, we focus on this distinction. Yoga helps improve proprioception, your awareness of where your body is in space. Research suggests that impaired proprioception is a key factor in recurrent injuries, and retraining this sense is vital for long-term recovery (Aman et al., 2015).
If you are looking for yoga Kew East options because you are recovering from an injury, you might feel intimidated by fast-paced classes or crowded gyms.
At New Moon Yoga Kew East, our philosophy is simple: injury isn't a barrier; it is a starting point. It is information that tells us where your body needs support.
Our small, semi-private classes allow us to guide your alignment specifically to support your recovery. Unlike large classes where you might get lost in the crowd, we see every move. This supervision is crucial. A study by Tilbrook et al. (2011) found that structured, teacher-led yoga programs are effective in managing chronic back pain because they offer modifications that keep the practice safe.

If there is one lesson I have learned in 17 years, it is this: Don’t push, create space and let the practice arrive to you.
In our culture, we are taught to “push through the pain”. In recovery, this is the worst advice you can follow. Real healing happens in the space we create, not the force we apply. By backing off and using props (like blocks and bolsters), you allow your nervous system to relax, which is when the true repair begins.
Whether you are a neighbor in Kew East or driving over for New Moon Yoga, know that you don't have to be “fixed” before you start. You start so you can heal.
My injury was the hardest lesson I ever learned, but it brought me to a practice that has kept me moving pain-free for nearly two decades.
